Major Functions: Provide direct site safety assistance to the yards within a given region to include: Direct Contact with four locations: • Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the local managers and employees • Identify and work with the key individuals responsible for safety activities in each location • Maintain open and clear lines of communications between all levels of line and staff management Duties & Responsibilities: • Visit all locations within the region on a regularly scheduled basis • Help identify physical, behavioral, and cultural exposures that could lead to loss • Promote safe and healthy working conditions • Cultivate an accident free environment • Help develop a culture to support company safety objectives • Gain intimate knowledge of vehicles, equipment, and other processes to understand limitations and to promote best practices • Coordinate investigation of major accidents and losses and develop strategies to address root causes • Provide cost effective solutions to identified substandard practices and conditions • Help locations identify sources for safety related equipment and solutions • Participate on a regular basis and periodically conduct weekly safety meetings • Attend company requested and/or sponsored meetings • Routinely observe and document safe and unsafe vehicle conditions and driver behaviors by riding with or behind company vehicles while traveling to and from job sites utilizing the appropriate checklist • Routinely visit job sites for the purpose of identifying hazards and observing deliveries while completing the Employee Jobsite Safety Observation Form • Review hiring and risk management policies and associated documents • Review and help maintain safety documentation including but not limited to o OSHA logs o Safety meeting minutes o Driver qualification files o Inspection and maintenance records o Accident summaries o Hours of service records o Driver logs • Assist with training development, sourcing, and delivery as needed including: o Management safety responsibilities o Defensive driving o Powered industrial truck inspections and operation o Boom crane safety o Fall protection o Material handling o Hazard communication//right-to-know o Personal protective equipment o Drug and alcohol awareness program o Smith System driver training • Identify training needs through previous losses, employee concerns, industry mishaps, and near misses • Periodically inspect vehicles and equipment for defects and compliance • Conduct property inspections as required • Review all accident reports and determine the types of controls needed to prevent similar losses • Provide safety recognition for yards and individuals demonstrating exemplary safety emphasis and results Regulatory Compliance: • Be a technical expert and technical resource for safety, loss prevention, risk management, OSHA, DOT, and other related disciplines. • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and standards • Remain current and fully informed about regulatory legislation • Consult with the locations for regulatory inspections
