More about the Department

In 1971, the Department of Safety Sciences was established within what is now the College of Health and Human Services to conduct professional programs in safety management and occupational safety and health. We have educated more than 1,700 safety and health professionals over the past thirty years. These graduates have excelled in their careers and are employed in a variety of industries, such as oil, chemicals, textiles, mining, steel, insurance, and manufacturing. Our goal is to provide you with a cutting-edge education so that you can also become one of our outstanding graduates. The following links provide more information about the Department.

Accreditation: The Safety Sciences Program is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Currently there are fewer than 10 safety programs accredited by ABET.
Grants & Scholarships: The strong support from industrial organizations has made many grants and scholarships available for safety sciences students.
ASSE: The Department has a student chapter for the American Society of Safety Engineers.
Rho Sigma Kappa: RSK is the Safety Sciences honor society.
Advisory Board: The Safety Sciences Department maintains a source of outside advice through an Advisory Board comprised of professionals in safety and health in academia, business, and institutions.
