SUMMER INTERN/CO-OP NEEDED

Join the System Safety Engineering Team at Lockheed Martin

System Safety Engineering is a specialty within the larger field of Systems Engineering.  In this regard, Systems Engineering is the use of structured methods and analysis in the design, development, integration, and testing of complex systems and products.  Similarly, System Safety Engineering involves the use of structured methods and analysis to ensure these systems and products are safe to operate and maintain.

Specifically, in the context of the Aegis Weapon System, Lockheed Martin System Safety Engineers are concerned about preventing accidents or “Mishaps” that could:

(1)           Inadvertent launch of ordnance or firing of weapons;

(2)           Prosecuting an engagement against a non-hostile vessel or aircraft;

(3)           Fratricide, including a missile striking a friendly vessel or aircraft or U.S. missiles or ordnance colliding with another U.S. missile or ordnance;

(4)           Injury to ownship personnel;

(5)           Damage to ownship equipment; and

(6)           Damage to the environment.

These mishaps are caused by conditions or occurrences referred to as Hazards.  The conditions or circumstances under which a Hazard can occur are referred to as Causal Factors.  These Hazards and Causal Factors can be associated with software or hardware.  For example, in the absence of System Safety Engineering, a programming error could result in automatic operations being conducted in an incorrect and potentially unsafe sequence, or hardware could be designed or manufactured in a way that causes it to be isolated from electrical ground and thereby posing an electrocution hazard.

System Safety Engineers work with designers and developers to build safety into the design of the system or product.  That is, to identify hazards and causal factors early in the design process so that they can be “designed-out” or eliminated from the design.  It is generally more protective and cost effective to identify and eliminate or control a hazard early in the design, than to add on safety devices, warning alarms, and safety procedures after the detailed design has been completed.

Regardless of whether they are incorporated into the design or added on, such controls are referred to as Mitigations.  Many of the day to day activities of the System Safety Engineer include the use of structured methods and analysis to:

(1)           Evaluate system and product requirements and designs, including subsequent changes;

(2)           Identify safety requirements and functions of the system or product;

(3)           Identify and document Hazards associated with the system or product and their Causal Factors;

(4)           Design and document Mitigations for Hazards and Causal Factors identified;

(5)           Participate in system or product testing to verify and validate safety requirements, safety functions, and mitigations;

(6)           Minimize the use of hazardous materials in the system or product, and document their amount and location for consideration during transport, operation, maintenance, and disposition; and much more.

Lockheed Martin internships offer competitive pay, housing assistance (if eligible) professional development, community service opportunities and the opportunity to convert to a full-time hire upon graduation.
