Religion and Labor
(Right to Left) Joe Delale, Fr. Jack O'Malley and Fr. Leon Leitem of Our Lady of the Angles Parish
Labor And Religion Connect! "Labor in the Pulpits" began in Chicago in 1996 and was introduced to Western Pennsylvania by Fr. Jack O' Malley, Roman Catholic priest in the diocese of Pittsburgh, and Joe Delale, AFL-CIO's Community Services Liaison. They have initiated the "Labor In The Pulpits" program into the Allegheny County Labor Council through the Labor and Religion Council of Western PA, a coalition of community, organized labor and clergy. Last year, in Western Pennsylvania more than 100 congregations, involving Christians, Jewish and Muslim backgrounds, heard their clergy or members from organized labor speak during Labor Day weekend. Many congregations published bulletin inserts as well. Double-click the links below to see the bulletin inserts. On October 6 2002, Father Jack O' Malley spoke at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Indiana, PA. He spoke on the theme of connecting Faith and Work and showed a video produced by the NICWJ titled " Prophetic Witness". The service was moderated by the Labor Center's James Watta.
Sí, se Puede! The book tells the story from a child's perspective about his Mother and her involvement in the Los Angeles janitor strike. It is beautifully illustrated and written in an bi-lingual style. It shows that children can also understand the labor movement and provide valuable support in their own way. The book can be obtained from the NICWJ.
For questions, suggestions, literature, or training materials, call Father Jack at (412) 361-4793 or Joe Delale at (412) 456-6851.
