Battle of Homestead

Erected in 1941 by the Steel Workers' Organizing Committee (SWOC) this monument in Homestead, at the High-level Bridge (next to Chiodo's Tavern), commemorates the 7 workers killed at the 1892 Battle of Homestead.

The Battle of Homestead Foundation (BHF), incorporated in 1996, evolved from the Homestead Strike Centennial Commemorative Committee.  It has as it’s primary mission to develop and implement an interpretive program for the Pump House that respects the importance of the site for American labor history.

On July 6, 1892, on the banks of the Monongahela River in Homestead, PA, there occurred perhaps the most famous and significant event in American labor history.

Most important, the Battle of Homestead marked a watershed in American labor history, a defining moment, where issues that are still relevant to the organization of work in the global economy were posed in particularly stark terms.
