Specific HPE Department Requirements for ED 242 and ED 342
l. Attend
all scheduled meetings, and conferences.
Check the Pre-Student Teaching Clinical Experiences I and II bulletin
board opposite Room 203 on the second floor frequently for notice of scheduled
meetings and events.
2. Complete
two clinical experiences prior to Student Teaching. Each experience must be a minimum of 6 1/2 days - preferably
10 days.
a. Students should be scheduled to
complete their first experience in their sophomore year and their second in
their junior year.
b. Maintain a daily log of the entire
experience throughout each course (must be typed). Be observant. Include
comments on the curriculum, methods or techniques used to motivate and create a
positive learning climate,
progressions, etc.
c. Write a reaction paper for 242 and 342
(your overall impression of the experience).
This must be well thought
through, well written, typed, and not less than three pages in
length.
3. Additional requirements for ED 242
a. Complete and submit three 1/2 day
observations of classroom teachers
other than your coop. These
observations must be typed. A half day observation must be one half of the
school day at the school in which you are doing the experience. It must be a minimum of 2 1/2 hours or three
class periods.
These observations must
include the following:
(1) Either a first or second
grade classroom teacher
(2) Either a fourth or fifth
grade classroom teacher
(3) A Special Ed./Guidance
Counselor/Nurse observation
b.
Submit contract and proper
evaluation forms to the Department Coordinator.
4. Additional requirements for ED 342
a. Observe and assist a Health teacher for
at least two(2) days. (If at all possible, half of the total time there should
be spent in health teaching.)
b. Observe a classroom teacher in another
field for 1/2 day (prefer Sp. Ed and Counselor Center). Your co-op can assist you in making a
selection. A half day observation must
be one half of the school day at the school in which you are doing the
experience. It must be a minimum of 2
1/2 hours and/or three class periods.
c. Both of the above observations must
be typed.
d. Conduct two interviews:
(1)
One with a person in the administrative
area (principal, assistant principal, guidance counselor, etc.)
(2) One with a member of the support staff
(custodian, office secretary, cafeteria supervisor, bus driver, etc.) Plan
intelligent questions in advance that will help you gain an understanding and
appreciation of their role.
(3) The summary of each interview must be typed.
5. Submit all materials for each
experience in a very complete neatly prepared and well organized notebook.
6. Attend a mandatory debriefing seminar
for your specific clinical experience (either ED 242 or ED 342). It will be your responsibility to learn
the correct date, time, and location, for the meeting you must attend for each
particular experience. You are
expected to come prepared to share significant meaningful observations from
your experience and to discuss any professional concerns that would benefit
your peers.
Evaluation Procedure
1. In order to achieve an "A" in
each course a student must meet all of the specific HPE requirements and
evaluation procedures for each Pre-Student Teaching Clinical Experience.

a "C" grade in ED 242 will not be permitted to register for ED 342.
3. Students that are unable to
achieve a "C" grade in ED 342 will not be permitted to register for
student teaching.
4. The notebook for each Pre-Student
Teaching Clinical Experience must be submitted, in complete form, by the
advertised due date for the particular experience. Incomplete notebooks will receive a percentage deduction for the
value of the part that was not complete.

Special Points of Emphasis
1. Register for the course during the
semester that you are doing this experience. For semester break and end of
spring experiences your transcript will have an "L" grade at the end
of the semester.
2. Before leaving school for your
experience, make sure you have obtained all proper forms for your cooperating
teacher which you must deliver during your first meeting.
3. Students enrolled in ED 342, or the
second experience, must make sure that their cooperating teachers understand
the emphasis on organization and teaching opportunities. This, of course, must be consistent with the
background and experience of the student.
One half of your experience should be in Health - if at all possible.
4. All materials submitted for the second
experience should be compared with insights gained from ED 242. The quality of the written work should be
excellent.
