HPED 264-"Advanced Aquatics" is a one-credit elective course within the IUP HPED department.  Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive current certification as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and Lifeguard.  Although not required as a prerequisite, it is highly recommended that students successfully complete HPED 263-"Aquatics" prior to enrollment in HPED 264-"Advanced Aquatics."

The philosophical basis for this class can be summed up by two statements:  (1) “it’s not how fast, but how far” and (2) “you don’t necessarily have to be a great swimmer to be a great swimming teacher.”  At no time should students feel their initial swimming ability will be a help or a hindrance to their grade.  In terms of this class, SPEED MEANS NOTHING!!  At no time should a student compare him/herself with any other student in class.  Each student progresses at his/her own ability rate and range during the semester, with the ultimate goal of each student having current certifications in WSI, Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional  Rescuer and First Aid upon the completion of this course.
