YOU MUST:

COMPLETE 24 CREDIT HOURS OF WORK.

FILL OUT INTERNSHIP APPROVAL FORM (get it from the Department Secretary).

PROVIDE 2 COPIES OF A SHORT JOB DESCRIPTION.

GIVE THE ABOVE TO ME.

REGISTER.

OBJECTIVES:

Provide "on the job" experience for ILR students.

Provide for practical application of classroom learning.

Enable students to assess their own status as an ILR professional.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Three (3) credits requires a minimum of 140 hours of work.  Six (6) credits requires a minimum of 280 hours.  Do not think in terms of minima.  Get as much experience as you can.

You are required to maintain a weekly log of major activities.  At the end of the term you must prepare a paper (approximately 10 pages) which highlights your major activities, accomplishments and concerns; and provides a self analysis of your strengths and areas that need additional development.

The paper and log are due by the first day of final examinations.  Failure to turn in a log will result in a loss of one letter grade.  Failure to turn in a paper will result in a failing grade for the internship.  A late paper will result in a drop of one letter grade for each week it is late.  Papers must be typed, logs do not need to be typed.

You should receive a copy of a yellow evaluation form with this syllabus.  It is to be given to your site supervisor.  He/she is requested to fill it out and return it to me by the first day of finals during a semester and the last Monday of your internship period during the summer.  You are required to see that it is returned to me on time.  If it is not returned, you will be docked one letter grade.

GRADING:

In addition to the need to get your log, paper, and evaluation to me on time, you will be evaluated as to the log's and paper’s quality. Your site supervisor’s evaluation will be weighed

as part of the grade.  Finally, I will assess the quality of your actual work from a labor relations/human resources perspective.

If the internship does not show sufficient time in either or both of these areas, the best grade you can achieve is a B!  Even if you walked on water while doing your internship, you must show sufficient time (and quality) in the areas relevant to the core coursework of the Department or you cannot earn an A grade.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

NO REGISTRATION BY THE END OF DROP – ADD MEANS NO CREDITS

AND A LOT OF AGGRAVATION FOR BOTH OF US!
