OBJECTIVES

The objective of this course is to provide students with a seminar course on leadership studies.  It will expose students to many writings and ideas of leadership theorists and practiconeers.  Students will analyze the thoughts and practices of various leadership studies, theories, and styles and will discuss the potential application of these theories and styles in Human Resource Management.

Each class session, students will engage in meaningful dialogue analyzing the assigned readings and will discuss the practicality of using the theories in the everyday organization.  To do this the students will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each leadership style and will try to determine the appropriate audience in which the leadership style will be successful.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The course will be taught in a seminar format and will consist of lectures, class discussion, assigned projects and group activities dealing with leadership applications.  Thorough preparation for and participation in each class session is expected.  During each class session, students will be required to apply what they have learned in an exercise that will be given during class.  These exercises will provide the student with a hands-on experience that will reinforce the subject material. As a result, attendance to each class is crucial.   Because the class will be led in a seminar format, your role each evening will be to participate intelligently.   My perception of your ability to do so will determine a substantial portion of your grade in this course.

EVALUATION

Evaluation will be defined as follows:

30%   Class participation, which include class exercises

30%   Leadership Paper on Selected Reading

10%   Presentation of Paper

30%   Final Position Paper

Grading will be done by percentiles (A = 90-100%, B = 80-90%, etc).

Each student will pick another book leadership studies and will be required to write a paper summarizing the important aspects of leadership each author stresses.  The students will analyze the book for its applicability in HRM and will evaluate in if the material read would impact their approach to life and how.  The student will submit the paper in a word document format and each student will get a copy of the paper.   The student will then lead a discussion in class on the merits of the book and its applicability to organizational leadership.    The final paper will require the student to take two leadership styles or theories discussed in the course and write a scholarly position paper complete with references.   Class participation will be based on the preparedness of each student – not only with regards to the assigned material, but also to the observation of organizational leadership in the outside world.

The deadline for submitting course requirements is the due date specified on the syllabus.  Assignments submitted after the deadline will be accepted but will be penalized one letter grade (10%) except in cases of serious personal illness or injury or other unusual circumstances discussed with the instructor in advance.  Except for bona fide emergencies or unusual circumstances requiring arrangements mutually agreed upon between the student and instructor in advance of the due date, no assignment will be accepted for evaluation once evaluated assignments have been returned to the class.
