Conrad J. Gates, 71, of Greensburg, Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations at IUP from 1981-1994, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He had only recently returned to the faculty in January to teach Employee Rights and Employment Discrimination to Cohort III students completing their programs at Monroeville. Jack's family have established the Conrad J. Gates Memorial Scholarship for Industrial Relations in the Foundation for IUP and suggested contributions to that fund in his memory from family, friends, alumni and friends of the department. Donations may be sent to Industrial and Labor Relations Department at IUP, c/o Foundation for IUP, 103 Sutton Hall, Indiana, PA 15705. The vast majority of ILR alumni had Jack for classes, nearly all for three classes or more (Labor Law, Employee Rights, Dispute Settlement) -- a virtual minor in Gates. He was a fabulous teacher -- holder of the IUP Outstanding Teaching Award -- and a wonderful colleague. We miss him deeply. Born July 16, 1931, in Buffalo, N.Y., Jack was a son of the late Homer and Emily Christine Machemer Gates. He was a member of St. Bruno Church, South Greensburg, and had served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Cornell University and Buffalo University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He was admitted to practice in the state courts of New York and Pennsylvania and in the Federal District Court of the United States. He also had a private law practice in Monroeville and was a labor arbitrator. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Westmoreland County Bar Association, Industrial Relations Research Association (Western Pa. chapter), Association of Pa. State College and University Faculties and the Pittsburgh Personnel Association. He was also a former department chair of business administration at St. Vincent College. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Stadlinger. Jack is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rosemary Dallap Gates; a son, Kurt Gates and his wife, Veldah, of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Jill and husband, Dr. James Abraham, of Greensburg and Christine Burke and husband, Sean, of South Riding, Va.; six grandchildren, Chad, Sara and Abigail Gates, Matthew and Thomas Abraham and Connor Burke; and a sister, Ellen Jane Gates of Buffalo, N.Y. Funeral services were held at St. Bruno Church on February 20. |
