syllabus, 2004 text.... HPED 263-"Aquatics" is a one-credit course required of all majors within the IUP HPED Core requirements. Students will receive instruction in a multitude of areas associated with aquatic leadership which include the following: instruction of ten styles of swimming; swimming meet management; water safety activities; aquatics games; skin diving; instructional diving; springboard diving, and instructional experiences of children and preschoolers. The philosophical basis for this class can be summed up in two statements: (1) “it’s not how fast, but how far” and (2) “you don’t need to be a great swimmer to be a great swimming teacher.” At no time should students feel their initial swimming ability will be a help or a hindrance to their grade. In terms of this class, SPEED MEANS NOTHING! The course is designed to provide the HPED major with solid fundamentals in a variety of areas associated with aquatics. This class is intended to motivate and prepare the student for further aquatic education and the acquisition of aquatic certifications (WSI, Lifeguarding, Scuba, Pool Operator Certification, etc.). Enthusiasm and effort throughout the class counts more heavily than aquatic ability that is developed prior to attendance in this course.
