Human Development & Environmental Studies Student Scholarships

Child & Family Studies and Family & Consumer Sciences Majors

M. JANE SEGAR LONGENECKER SCHOLARSHIP
M. Jane Segar Longenecker, a member of the Class of 1934, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education. In celebration of her 60th reunion from Indiana State Teacher College, Dr. & Mrs. Herbert Longenecker established this scholarship.

Eligibility: Full-time junior or senior, Family & Consumer Sciences or Child & Family Studies student with two or more semesters remaining at IUP, a 3.5 GPA, community and/or university service, and financial need.

SUSAN E. FINLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Susan E. Finley graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1932 with a degree in Home Economics Education. Upon her death in 1997, she set up an endowed scholarship to help others achieve their educational goals.

Eligibility: Full-time sophomore or junior, Family & Consumer Sciences or Child & Family Studies student with four or more semesters remaining at IUP, a 3.0 GPA, and financial need.

ROBERT & RUTH O’CONNER SCHOLARSHIP
Robert & Ruth O’Connor established this scholarship in celebration of Mrs. O’Connor 50th class reunion from IUP. She graduated from the Home Economics Education Department, taught Home Economics for eight years and served as an Extension Agent for 14 years.

Eligibility: Full-time student in Family & Consumer Sciences or Child & Family Studies, a 2.5 GPA, community and/or university service, and financial need.

ELEANOR M. GALLATI SCHOLARSHIP
Eleanor M. Gallati, an IUP Professor Emeritus, her colleagues and friends established an educational scholarship upon her retirement in 1989 from the Home Economics Education Department. She joined the IUP faculty in 1957. It is her desire to assist students entering the fields of Child & Family Studies and Family & Consumer Sciences.

Eligibility: Full-time senior majoring in Family & Consumer Sciences or Child & Family Studies with a minimum 3.25 GPA, community and/or university service, and financial need.

Fashion Merchandising Majors

JOAN SCHMITT FASHION SCHOLARSHIP
Joan Schmitt, along with colleagues and friends established this scholarship upon her retirement in 2001 from the Human Development & Environmental Studies Department where she served as a faculty member since 1975. This scholarship provides support to Fashion Merchandising students who have strong academic achievements, financial need and work while attending class full-time.

Eligibility: Fashion Merchandising major (must have earned nine credits in FSMR from IUP) with one or more semesters remaining at IUP, a 2.8 GPA, full-time student while working ten hours per week, and demonstrates financial need.

Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design Majors

BETTY L. WOOD SCHOLARSHIP
Colleagues, friends and family established the Betty Wood Scholarship in honor of her retirement from the Consumer Services Department, IUP, in 1992. The scholarship provides support for majors in Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design.

Eligibility: Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design majors with two or more semesters remaining at IUP and a 3.0 GPA; consideration is given to financial need.

SUSAN E. SHUBRA SCHOLARSHIP
Family, friends and colleagues established this scholarship to serve as a living legacy to Susan Shubra’s brief, yet meaningful life. She was a member of the Consumer Services Department at the time of her death.

Eligibility: Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design majors with one or more semesters remaining at IUP and a 3.0 GPA; consideration is given to financial need.

Interior Design Majors

Donna L. Streifthau Scholarship for Interior Design
Donna Streifthau, along with colleagues and friends, established this scholarship upon her retirement in 1998 from the Human Development & Environmental Studies Department where she served as a faculty member in the Interior Design program since 1972.  She also served as chairperson of the Consumer Services Department and later the combined departments of Home Economics/Child Development Family Relations Department and Consumer Services now called Human Development & Environmental Studies. The scholarship provides support to Interior Design students.

Eligibility: Full-time student majoring in Interior Design. To be given to a sophomore for use in the junior year. The award will be given based on scholarship and service to the community and/or the program beyond any service requirements associated with coursework.

Child & Family Studies, Family & Consumer Sciences, Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design Majors

ELEANOR JEAN ANTHONY SCHOLARSHIP
Eleanor Jean Anthony, a 1943 graduate of the Home Economics Education Department at IUP, had a distinguished career in the US Coast Guard during World War II and taught Home Economics for 25 years.

Eligibility: Freshman Child & Family Studies, Family & Consumer Sciences, Fashion Merchandising and/or Interior Design major with good high school GPA & SAT scores, statement of financial need and two letters of reference from high school teachers. Given to one freshman who continues to receive the scholarship throughout four years as long as qualifications are met.

PITTSBURGH HOME ECONOMICS TEACHERS SCHOLARSHIP
The Pittsburgh Home Economics Club initiated this scholarship in 1980 for deserving students in the Home Economics Education Department.

Eligibility: Family & Consumer Sciences major (given priority); if no qualified candidates Child & Family Studies, Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design majors are eligible. Students must have a 3.0 GPA, be a full-time senior (priority) or junior, be a graduate of one of the Pittsburgh Public Schools, and have a statement of financial need.

FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES EDUCATIONAL ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established by alumni from the Family & Consumer Sciences Education major (formerly Homer Economics Education) with the Department of Human Development & Environmental Studies. The alumni wish that this scholarship support those students preparing to become teachers and who are committed to the curriculum that teach young people how to establish productive and happy home and community lives for children and families.

Eligibility: Family & Consumer Sciences major (given priority), if no qualified candidates Child & Family Studies, Fashion Merchandising and Interior Design majors are eligible. Students must have a 3.0 GPA, must demonstrate community and university service, and have a statement of financial need.
