B.S. in Child Development and Family RelationsThe mission of the CDFR major is to prepare students for professional positions in child developmental and family services. These positions can be found in federal, state, and local programs and agencies. Students are prepared to provide direct services and to assume positions of leadership in human services related fields. Graduates are also prepared to further their education in Child Development, Family Studies, and related areas. Available CertificationsStudents graduating from this program are eligible to receive the Nursery-Kindergarten Certificate from the Bureau of Private Academic Schools of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This certificate enables graduates to work in private preschools or kindergartens, Head Start, and child care programs. It also establishes eligibility in Pennsylvania’s lottery for loan forgiveness for teachers who work in childcare. Students in this major are also eligible to work towards receiving the Family Life Educator Provisional Certificate awarded by the National Council of Family Relations. To be eligible for this certificate, students must take the following courses in addition to the regular CDFR requirements: FCSE 350 Family Life Education, PSY 312 Adult Development and Aging, and HPED 450 Curriculum and Programming in Sexuality Education. Student AssociationThe CDFR Council is an organization for any student who is interested in furthering the well being of children and their families. Its membership is comprised primarily of students who are majoring or minoring in the CDFR field. The organization sponsors guest speakers, holds fund-raisers for children’s organizations, organizes field trips, and provides leadership and social opportunities for its members.
