B.S. in Fashion Merchandising

Fashion Merchandising student

The Fashion Merchandising program prepares individuals for careers associated with design, production, quality control, distribution, merchandising and promotion of apparel and related products as determined by changing global, societal and environmental needs.

The changing and challenging world of fashion is one of the most practical and competitive fields in which to pursue a career. Successful people in fashion merchandising have a flair for both fashion and business. The Fashion Merchandising program at IUP provides courses that emphasize apparel production and distribution, textiles, apparel merchandising and promotion, ready-to-wear analysis, quality control in production, textile testing, historic costume and textiles, aesthetics, global issues in textiles and apparel, visual merchandising, color theory and application, and apparel construction and design.
The Eberly College of Business complements the Fashion Merchandising major by providing study in one of three options: Business Administration, Marketing, and Small Business Management. Students may earn a minor in Business Administration. Computer literacy and mathematical skills are emphasized.

A cooperative program between IUP and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City allows students to study fashion/accessories design, manufacturing management, advertising design, advertising and communications, textile/surface design, and textile development and marketing. Students participate in this program during their senior year.

Student Association

The IUP Fashion Association is the Fashion Merchandising students’ organization, which fosters professionalism through various activities both on and off campus. The organization sponsors guest speakers, providing an opportunity to network with alumni and other professionals in the field. Students also attend workshops and museum exhibits, participate in fund raising activities, conduct and supervise fashion shows for community events, and do public service activities.

Program Garment Collections

The Fashion Merchandising program has two costume collections. The historic costume collection has approximately 1,500 costumes and accessories dating from 1870 through the 1980's. The collection is used as an aid in classroom teaching and for student use in research, professional presentations and displays/exhibits. Students who have an interest in historic costume also volunteer to work with the collection doing cataloging and costume conservation.

The second collection is a ready-to-wear analysis collection consisting of approximately 150 articles. The collection represents different garment parts and styles and is used by students to analyze industrial stitches and seam types.
