WHY IUP?

If you're interested in preparing for a career in nutrition and dietetics, studying at IUP can put you on the fast track to attaining your goal. IUP is an excellent choice for study in health-related fields because even though it is a large university with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities - not to mention a first rate faculty - the learning environment is more like that of a much smaller school.

Here are some of the advantages an IUP education can provide to you:

  • A well-rounded nutrition program that includes a strong Liberal arts component
  • Courses are taught by faculty members who have close ties to the professional communities beyond the campus , and who may be involved in research projects that are advancing the state of knowledge in food and nutrition
  • Access to state-of-the art equipment and facilities unavailable at many smaller institutions and inaccessible to students at many other large universities
  • Faculty who enjoy teaching and are committed to teaching excellence
  • An emphasis in teaching whereby the student is an active participant in learning
  • Faculty who are active in food and nutrition professional organizations
  • Strong advising, with one-to-one relationships in a caring environment
  • Most courses will have fewer than 30 students
  • Opportunities for on-site experiences and field work to gain real-world experience with professional guidance
  • Bright prospects for future employment or acceptance to graduate or professional schools or dietetic internship
  • Excellent education at an affordable price
  • An opportunity to join a very active Student Dietetic Association to gain valuable experience and networking
  • An opportunity to live and learn in a picturesque, pleasant college town of about thirty thousand people

Student Comments

Sounds too good to be true? Here is what a few of our IUP graduates say about their dietetic education (note: job titles listed are those at the time quote was received and not necessary current job title of the alumni):

  • "I just wanted to extend a few words of appreciation to express the way I feel. As I completed the post-graduation questionaire, I could not help to think about how GREAT I had it at IUP. I really tried to limit the "strong features" of the program, but it was hard. The program is very strong and well-rounded. But it's not just the classes and schooling that make IUP, and in particular the FN dept., so great. It's the fact that we, the students, are taught by professionals who care about others. Keep up the GREAT work!!" - Paul Rebholz, Class of 1999
  • "IUP offers students the personal attention of the smaller class size with the academic benefits of the university to place them in a competitive position to gain acceptance to postgraduate practical experiences." - Carol Yuran, RD, Class of 1990, Clinical Dietitian, Lee Hospital, Johnstown, PA.
  • "Education is the foundation of a strong and successful career, and IUP was my cornerstone. The faculty has a strong background in education and brings essential industry experience to the classroom. The depth of the curriculum gave me the confidence in the field that I need to go out and challenge myself. Without a doubt, I would recommend IUP to anyone wanting a good education." - Catharine H. Powers, MS, RD, Class of 1982, Team Leader for Curriculum and Instruction, The Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, NY.
  • "My education from IUP fully prepared me for the successful completion of my ADA dietetic internship and has continued to sustain me during my professional career as a Registered Dietitian. I credit the quality of the Dietetics Program curriculum and the support and guidance that I received from the faculty for my current and future successes." - Daniel L. Shields, RD, Class of 1984, Coordinator of Patient Food Service, New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center, New York, NY.
  • "I have achieved many career goals because of the comprehensive academic background IUP provided. The department faculty members are extraordinarily responsive, committed, and supportive. Given the opportunity to choose my undergraduate college again, without question, I would choose the best -- IUP." - Kathy Burke-Shull, MEd, RD, Class of 1987, Internship Director/Education Coordinator, Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA.
