Community Nutrition Services (CNS) is directed by Dr. Susan Dahlheimer with Ann Roberts Jesick, M.D. serving as Medial Director. Graduate Dietetic Interns in the Department of Food and Nutrition provide counseling services.

Why Choose CNS:

CNS provides services for Indiana residents, IUP faculty and staff and IUP students with medical needs. The goal of CNS is to provide high-quality nutrition intervention and counseling in either a physicians office or in the CNS office. CNS state-of-the-art preventive healthcare services are convenient, comprehensive and cost effective and can help the physician supply patients with an added value to the office visit.

CNS Specifically Provides:

  • Nutrition intervention to the community through counseling, education, and research activities.
  • Evaluate food intake, health status, and blood composition using: computerized diet analysis, cholesterol screening, body composition testing including bioelectrical impedence, and glucose monitoring.
  • Specialized counseling for diabetes control, weight management, cholesterol control, eating disorders, pregnancy, lactation, athletic training, general health and wellness, high blood pressure, and other medical problems that require nutrition intervention.

Nutrition Connection Services are sponsored by the Department of Food and Nutrition with support from the Foster Dining Hall and Student Cooperative Association. Dr. Susan Dahlheimer is the director of Nutrition Connection.

The purpose of Nutrition Connection is to provide pre-professional training in nutrition intervention to junior and senior dietetics majors and provides IUP students with information about nutrition for a variety of personal concerns. The overall goal of Nutrition Connection is to promote healthy eating and body weight with nutrition recommendations tailored to meet individual needs, preferences, and goals.

Nutrition Connection offers nutrition assessment and intervention through individual counseling. Services are provided by students who have completed course work in wellness and clinical nutrition, and are currently enrolled in FN463 Nutrition Counseling. A Registered Dietitian and IUP faculty member, Dr. Susan Dahlheimer, teaches the course and supervises all of the services. Services are also monitored by graduate students majoring in nutrition.

Nutrition Connection is a free service to IUP students concerned about healthy eating habits, fitness, weight management, nutrition related medical problems, or eating disorders.

Nutrition assessment services include all clients are offered a computerized diet analysis as part of their program. Blood glucose testing and cholesterol screening are offered periodically for a nominal fee.



Sports Nutrition Services (SNS), directed by Dr. Rita Johnson and staffed by Department of Food and Nutrition undergraduate and graduate students, is co-sponsored by the Departments of Food and Nutrition and Sports Medicine.

SNS is a nutrition service provided to coaches and athletes to assist in optimizing their athletic performance through good nutritional habits.

The goals of SNS are to:

  • Inform and counsel athletes and coaches about healthful nutrition habits.
  • Assist the Departments of Food and Nutrition and Sports Medicine with educating dietetic and nutrition students as well as student trainers about sports nutrition.
  • Provide sports nutrition education and practical experience to Food and Nutrition graduate students.
Services provided include Individual Consultations, Team Presentations, and Nutrition Nuggets. Individual (and group) Consultations that counsel and educate athletes about several nutrition topics including: enhancing athletic performance, gaining weight, losing weight, eating disorders, and supplements. Team Presentations are 15-60 minute long presentations to teams and camps regarding nutrition topics such as: the importance of carbohydrate in performance, fluid replacement, protein needs, eating on the road, pre- and post-competition eating, supplements, ergogenic aids, and safe and effective weight loss or weight gain. Nutrition Nuggets are short 10-minute presentations to athletes and coaches during study halls, right before practice, or just after practice on topics including: specific ergogenic aids, snacking to enhance energy, fluid replacement, eating on the road, weight loss, weight gain, pre-competition meals, post-competition meals, carbohydrate loading, and training diets.
