Undergraduate and/or graduate degree, and dietetic internship programs in food and nutrition prepare students for exciting careers in a variety of settings. Career opportunities include:

Student Dietetic Association (SDA)

The purpose of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Student Dietetic Association is to provide increased awareness of the field of dietetics by serving as a guide to student involvement:
  • To inform all students on the various aspects of dietetics.
  • To increase involvement in food and nutrition activities through educational experiences.
  • To become better acquainted with the American Dietetic Association through opportunities provided by the Pennsylvania state organization.
  • To further educate the community with sound food and nutrition information.
Hotel Restaurant Association (HRA)

A student organization that meets monthly. All members are encouraged to become active participants. Announcements for meetings are posted throughout Ackerman. Meetings provide opportunities to meet professionals in the field, potential employers and to have fun.

American Dietetic Association (ADA)

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) is the nation's largest professional organization for dietitians, dietetic technicians and dietetic professionals. ADA was founded in 1917 and currently has more than 60,000 members. The purpose of the Association is the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the population through the provision of direction and leadership for quality dietetic practice, education, and research. Application information is available on the department bulletin board. Pennsylvania Dietetic Association (PADA) The purpose of the Association is the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the population through the provision of direction and leadership for quality dietetic practice, education and research, as stated in the ADA By-laws.

Institute of Food Technologists (IFT)

This organization is comprised of educators and business people associated with the food industry. Students considering a career in the food industry should join. Student membership dues for the Pittsburgh section of IFT are $6.00 per year. Contact Dr. Mia Barker (Office: 105 Ackerman; Phone: 357-3283).

American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS)

The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is an organization dedicated to the updating and improvement of all areas of home economics. It is active in the pursuit of legislative action and public awareness of important issues. AAFCS provides important resources for the professionals in all areas of home economics.
