The Department of Food and Nutrition offers a Bachelor's of Science degree in Nutrition with two tracks, Dietetics and Nutrition. The dietetic program is an accredited didactic program in dietetics (2001) by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) for the American Dietetic Association. A Master's of Science degree in Food and Nutrition is also offered. In addition to the graduate degree, the Department has a Dietetic Internship, accredited in 1998 by CADE and reaffirmed in December, 2003. A Nutrition Minor is available for students majoring in related health disciplines. The department provides Liberal Studies courses that are available to all university students. These include:

  • FDNT143 Nutrition and Wellness, an option in the university's Liberal Studies requirements for Health and Wellness
  • FDNT145 Introduction to Nutrition, a Liberal Studies Elective
  • LBST499 Battle for Perfection, a Synthesis Course
  • LBST499 Food and Culture, a Synthesis Course
  • LBST499 Screen Cuisine, a Synthesis Course
The Department believes in preparing professionals for careers in fields where jobs currently exist, as well as fostering a student's ability to adapt to changing job markets of the future. Technology is an important component of most courses, including distance education course offerings. Along with offering coursework, the Department provides application experiences through the integration of laboratory exercises, research and field-based experience opportunities.

The Department mission reflects the total philosophy of the College of Health and Human Services and the University. Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is committed to the preservation, expansion, and transmission of knowledge. Students learn to think critically, communicate effectively, analyze information, and solve problems. The Department assists students toward a foundation for further learning and supports individual self-development within the context of concern for the community and society.
